THE EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF THE BRAND THAT SET OUT TO BRING NATURE INTO THE HOME AND ENDED UP REWILDING THE IDEA OF BUSINESS.

A year in the writing, a lifetime in the making, and inspired by 3.7 billion years of life itself, discover the wild story of House of Hackney, in the words of co-founder, Frieda Gormley.

Part memoir, part manifesto, ‘In the Company of Nature’ is an invitation to fall back in love with life, and to let Nature guide how we build, work, and live.

Following the journey of Frieda and her husband and co-founder Javvy, what began as a simple desire to bring the natural world into the home became something far greater than they could have ever imagined. Through courage, crisis, and creative awakening, Frieda recounts how the design house became a living experiment in the next era of business - where beauty, activism, spirituality, and systems-change come together.

A book with heart (and guts), ‘In the Company of Nature’ shows us that change doesn’t start at the top; it begins at the fringe, and small business carries both a unique power and urgent responsibility to not simply sustain, but to create the conditions for our collective flourishing.

Our Progress

Our Factories

Our Factories

Designed with purpose, made with love and built to last. We don’t make ‘products’; we make 'future Heirlooms'. Unique, authentic pieces that are inspired by the past and designed to be passed down to the next generation.

Upon founding our House, we spent six months travelling the length and breadth of the UK in search of the country’s finest craftspeople. We are proud to still work closely with these small-scale, family-run businesses today – preserving specialist, age-old trades (not to mention local jobs) while delivering unparalleled quality.

Each design is a celebration of traditional craftsmanship and sublime artistry, made to stand the test of time. No wonder, then, that we call them ‘future heirlooms’

Our Impact

Our Impact

Since the day our House was built, a sense of compassion for people and planet has served as the foundation of everything we do. House of Hackney is evolving from a B Corp sustainable brand to a regenerative one. This means doing things differently to bring about social and economic change, promoting the restoration and regeneration of natural resources and social systems. It means going beyond simply ‘sustaining’ and instead, actively making things better.

From how our raw materials are farmed and the farmers who grow them to the craft people who make the finished product, our team who sell them and everyone and everything in between, it means ensuring people and planet are considered at every touch point. Read more.

From farm to furnishings, we ensure the natural world and the people within it are considered at every touchpoint. At House of Hackney, we’re all about making changes to protect the natural world and we are always seeking out ways to evolve our business that work more in harmony with Mother Nature. A big part of that is questioning the materials we use; are they the best available and can we do better?

As standard, our wallpaper is made using PVC-free, FSC certified, purposely grown materials, printed with water-based, environmentally safe inks and is made especially to order, reducing waste.

From natural mycelium products and sustainable cork materials to working with paper scientists to explore creating wallpaper from non-wood fibres, we are committed to discovering new material innovations and new ways of thinking and making products.
